What are essential oils?
Essential oils have been around for centuries and are renowned for being used in aromatherapy, for food, spiritual healing, physical healing and cosmetics especially perfumes. Generally extracted by distillation, they are often used for aromatherapy by either inhaling the oil or massaging into the skin. Inhaling the aromas from essential oils stimulates the limbic system the part of the brain responsible for emotions, behaviours, smell and memory which partly explains why familiar scents trigger these memories or emotions.
Although essential oils are natural they can be harmful if not used correctly so just take note of a few of the following precautions.
Never apply essential oils directly to the skin as they can cause irritation and side effects. Always dilute with a carrier oil.
Do not use essential oils internally.
Always use with extreme caution when using in children and dilute to 0,5% strength.
Check the side effects of essential oils before you use them as some are not recommended during pregnancy or if you suffer from epilepsy.
Only use oils that are 100% natural, are not adulterated with any additives or synthetic oils. You will know if they are unadulterated oils as its official name will be on the label eg “Lavandula Angustifolia” rather than just lavender oil.
You can choose an essential oil either by the properties and benefits that they have or purely by our own preference.
